Ibn ʿAdī says in al-Kāmil:

Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Qaṭṭān related to us; Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us, saying: “Ibn Lahiʿah wrote to us, on the authority of Abū ʿUshshānah, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, ‘Allah truly marvels at a young man who passes through youth without any lapse.’ (1)”

Muḥammad ibn Khuraym al-ʿUqaylī said: “I heard Hishām ibn ʿAmmār preaching:
‘Speak the truth, and the Truth will lodge you in the dwellings of the people of truth, on a Day when judgement will proceed by nothing but the truth.’”

Muḥammad ibn al-Fayḍ al-Ghassānī said: “Hishām ibn ʿAmmār used to place ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, fourth.”

I say: In this he differed from the people of his city but followed the leading traditionists.

Abū Ḥātim said: “When Hishām grew old, his condition changed.”

Muḥammad ibn al-Fayḍ also said: “I heard Hishām relate:
‘In Jūsiyah (2) there was a wiry man (3) who owned a mule. Each Friday he would set out before dawn on his mule from Jūsiyah—one of the villages of Ḥimṣ—pray the Friday prayer in the mosque of Damascus, then return and spend the night with his family. People were amazed at him.
Later, when his mule died, he looked at its flanks and discovered that it had no ribs at all—only two smooth plates of solid bone.’

(1) Its chain of transmission is weak because Ibn Lahiʿa is unreliable. Abū ʿUshāna, whose personal name is Ḥayy b. Yuʾman, is trustworthy. The same report is found in Aḥmad, Musnad, 4/151, through the isnād of Qutaybah b. Saʿīd → Ibn Lahiʿa → Abū ʿUshāna → ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir. (2) The word is pronounced with ḍamma on the first letter, followed by sukūn; the sīn carries a kasra, and the yāʾ is lightly opened. It designates a village belonging to Ḥimṣ, situated to the south of that city on the paved road between Ḥimṣ and Baalbek, about six farsakhs from Ḥimṣ. (3) That is, “tall and well-built.” The poet Ṭufayl says: *Asīla majrā ad-damʿ, khamsānat al-ḥashā,* *burūd ath-thanāyā, dhāt khuluq mushraʿib* (“Her tear-path is smooth, her waist slender; her teeth gleam white, a woman of lofty stature.”)
