there, yet he was attacked in the night and both his hands were dislocated. We have no enemy there but them; they are the ones we suspect, and I have decided to expel them.”
Once ʿUmar had resolved on this, a man from the clan of Abū al-Ḥuqayq came to him and said, “Commander of the Believers, will you drive us out when Muhammad gave us safe-conduct and put us on contract?” ʿUmar answered, “Do you think I have forgotten the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ‘How will it be with you when you are turned out of Khaybar, your she-camel carrying you away night after night?’” He then expelled them and gave them the value of their produce in cash, camels, and assorted goods—pack-saddles, ropes, and the like.
