Among the solitary and objectionable reports transmitted by Suwayd—one for which he is particularly famous—is the following chain: from Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ, from Shuʿbah, from Qatādah, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
It was said, “Messenger of Allah, if only you would perform the funeral prayer for the mother of Saʿd.” He offered the prayer for her a month later, for he had been away (1).
In this narration Suwayd has no corroborating transmitter.
Suwayd also reported: “Ibn ʿUyaynah related to us—from ʿĀṣim, from Zirr, from ʿAbd Allāh—in a report traced back to the Prophet ﷺ: ‘The Mahdī will be from the descendants of Fāṭimah.’”
Isḥāq al-Minjaneqī passed this report on from him, whereas what the scholars actually narrate from Ibn ʿUyaynah with this chain is only: “A man of my household, whose name matches mine, will rule” (2).
Abū Bakr al-Ismāʿīlī said: “Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Ṣūfī read to us from his original manuscript, saying: ‘Suwayd narrated to us, from Mālik, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, from Abū Bakr, that the Prophet ﷺ presented a gift to Abū Bakr (3).’”
Al-Khaṭīb commented: “No one has corroborated Suwayd in this report.”
Al-Ḥasan ibn Fahm related from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn—when Suwayd’s name was mentioned—that he said, “May Allah not bless him.”
Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī, regarding the ḥadīth, “Whoever speaks in our religion on the basis of his own opinion, kill him” (4), said
