Hamzah al-Sahmī relates: “I asked al-Dāraqutnī about Suwayd ibn Saʿīd, and he replied:
‘Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn spoke critically of him, saying: “Suwayd narrated from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Aʿmash, from ʿAṭiyyah, from Abū Saʿīd that the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn are the leaders of the youth of Paradise (1).’”
Yaḥyā added, “This attribution to Abū Muʿāwiyah is false; no one transmitted it except Suwayd, and Suwayd was disparaged for relating this ḥadīth.”
Al-Dāraqutnī continued: “We went on thinking that the matter was as Yaḥyā had stated and that Suwayd had committed a serious offense by narrating it, until I travelled to Egypt and found the same ḥadīth in the Musnad of Abū Yaʿqūb al-Minjaneqī—who was reliable—transmitted from Abū Kurayb, from Abū Muʿāwiyah. Thus Suwayd was exonerated.
Furthermore, the ḥadīth is sound from Abū Muʿāwiyah, and al-Nasāʾī has transmitted it through this very Abū Yaʿqūb (2).”’
Al-Bukhārī said, “The ḥadīth of Suwayd is anomalous.”
Ibn al-Jawzī also reports that Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said, “His narrations are to be abandoned.” This citation, however, is rejected; Aḥmad never said that.
