he does not veil her, she will be counted among those whom his right hand possesses. When he set out, he seated her behind him and drew a curtain between her and the people. Recorded by al-Bukhari.
Hammād ibn Salamah said: ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUmar—so I think—narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought the people of Khaybar until he forced them into their fortress. He thus gained control of their land, their crops, and their date-palms. They then sued for peace on condition that they evacuate the area, taking only what their mounts could carry, while the gold and silver would belong to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They were to leave, and he stipulated that they must neither conceal nor misappropriate anything; should they do so, they would forfeit every covenant and pledge. Yet they hid a leather pouch containing wealth and jewellery belonging to Ḥuyayy ibn Akhtab, which he had brought with him to Khaybar when Banū al-Naḍīr were expelled.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Ḥuyayy’s uncle, “What has become of Ḥuyayy’s pouch that he brought from Banū al-Naḍīr?” He replied, “Expenditures and war have consumed it.” The Prophet said, “The treaty is recent and the sum was greater than that.” He then handed him over to al-Zubayr, who subjected him to interrogation with punishment. Ḥuyayy had earlier entered a ruined building, and the uncle said, “I saw Ḥuyayy wandering around a ruin over there.” They went, searched it, and found the pouch in the ruin.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ executed the two sons of al-Ḥuqayq—one of whom had been Ṣafiyyah’s husband—enslaved their women and children, and distributed their property because of the breach of covenant they had committed. He intended to expel them altogether, but they said, “O Muhammad, leave us in this land; we will cultivate it and look after it.” As the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions had no servants to work the land, he allowed them to remain on the basis that they would receive half of the produce for as long as it pleased him.
ʿAbd Allah ibn Rawāḥah used to come to them each year, estimate the harvest, and require them to hand over half. They complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the severity of his estimate and tried to bribe him. He said, “O enemies of Allah, are you trying to tempt me with illicit gain? By Allah, I have just come from the person dearest to me, while you are more hateful to me than apes and swine, yet nothing will drive me…"
