- al-Musayyab ibn Wāḍiḥ ibn Sarḥān al-Sulamī, al-Tallumnasī*
The imam, ḥadith expert, and scholar Abū Muḥammad al-Sulamī, al-Tallumnasī (1)—the nisba refers to a village near Ḥimṣ.
He transmitted ḥadith from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān, Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, Ḥafṣ ibn Maysarah—his earliest shaykh—Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī, Yūsuf ibn Asbāṭ, and many others.
Among those who narrated from him were Dhū al-Nūn al-Miṣrī—despite his seniority—Abū Zurʿah, Abū Ḥātim, Muḥammad ibn Tammām al-Bahrānī, Abū ʿArūbah al-Ḥarrānī, al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān, Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd, Aḥmad ibn Hishām ibn al-Layth al-Fārisī, and others.
Abū Ḥātim said, “He is truthful, but he makes many mistakes; when these are pointed out to him, he does not accept the correction.”
Al-Nasāʾī held a favorable opinion of him and used to say, “People give us trouble over him.”
Ibn ʿAdī mentioned him, quoting several objectionable reports, then remarked, “I hope the rest of his narrations are sound, and he is someone whose ḥadith are worth writing down.”
I heard Abū ʿArūbah say, “Al-Musayyab would relate only what he personally knew and had carefully verified.”
Ibn ʿAdī said: I heard al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qaṭṭān say: I heard al-Musayyab ibn Wāḍiḥ say, “I left Tallumnas intending to travel to Egypt to meet Ibn Lahīʿah, but I was informed that he had already died.”
