Ḥajjāj ibn al-Shāʿir said: I heard Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal say, “If I were to narrate from those who capitulated during the inquisition, I would report from only two: Abū Maʿmar and Abū Kurayb. As for Abū Maʿmar, ever since he conceded he has continued to censure himself for answering and for undergoing the trial, and he commends those who refused to comply. As for Abū Kurayb, two dīnārs were assigned to him while he was in need, yet he left them untouched when he learned that they had been granted to him for that reason.”
Al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān related that Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr said, “No one in Iraq possesses more ḥadīth than Abū Kurayb, and I know of no one more knowledgeable about the traditions of our region than he.”
He was deemed reliable by al-Nasāʾī and others.
Abū Ḥātim said: “Trustworthy.”
Abū ʿAmr Aḥmad ibn Naṣr al-Khaffāf said: “After Isḥāq, I have not seen among the senior scholars anyone with a better memory than Abū Kurayb.”
Mūsā ibn Isḥāq said: “I heard one hundred thousand ḥadīths from Abū Kurayb.”
Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Ṭālib reported: Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā adh-Dhuhlī asked me, ‘Who is the most accurate memoriser you have seen in Iraq?’ I replied, ‘After Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, I have not seen anyone with a better memory than Abū Kurayb.’
The ḥāfiẓ Abū ʿAlī an-Naysābūrī said: “I heard Ibn ʿUqdah giving precedence to Abū Kurayb…”
