85 – Sajjadah, Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan b. Ḥammād b. Kusayyib* (D, Q, S)
He was an Imām, an exemplar, a ḥadith scholar, and a staunch traditionalist: Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan b. Ḥammād b. Kusayyib al-Ḥaḍramī, originally from Baghdad.
He narrated from: Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh, Ḥafṣ b. Ghiyāth, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad al-Muḥāribī, ʿAlī b. Hāshim b. al-Barīd, Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar, Muḥammad b. Fuḍayl, and many others.
Narrators who reported from him include: Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, and—through an intermediary—al-Nasāʾī; as well as Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī, Aḥmad b. al-Ḥasan al-Ṣūfī, ʿAlī b. Isḥāq b. Zāṭiyā (1), Abū Labīd al-Sāmī, Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī, Yaḥyā b. Ṣāʿid, and many others.
Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ṣabbāḥ said: Someone informed Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal that Sajjadah was asked about a man who said to his wife, “You are divorced three times if I speak to a heretic.” The man then spoke to someone who claims, “The Quran is created.” Sajjadah ruled, “His wife is divorced.” Aḥmad remarked, “How mistaken he is!”
ʿAlī b. Fayrūz said: I asked Sajjadah about a man who swore, making divorce conditional, that he would not speak to an unbeliever, yet he spoke to a person who says, “The Quran is created.” Sajjadah replied, “His wife is divorced.” (2)
