ʿAbd al-Ghāfir ibn Muḥammad al-Fārisi informed us in the year 448 AH; Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Iṣbahāni informed us in 372 AH; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Māsarjisī narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ḥanẓalī narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus informed us, from al-Aʿmash, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting beneath a palm-tree when a gust of wind arose. He stood up in alarm, and when he was asked about it he said, ‘I feared that it might be the Hour.’ (1)”
Its chain consists of trustworthy narrators, but al-Aʿmash was a mudallis (one who occasionally concealed his immediate source), even though he did meet and relate directly from Anas ibn Mālik.
Abū al-Maʿālī al-Abarqūhī informed us; Abū al-Faraj ibn ʿAbd al-Salām informed us; Abū al-Faḍl al-Urmawī, Abū Ghālib ibn al-Dāyah, and Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṭarāʾifī likewise informed us; Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad informed us; ʿUbayd Allāh al-Zuhrī informed us; Jaʿfar al-Firyābī narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh narrated to us; al-Naḍr ibn Shumayl informed us; Abū Maʿshar, from Saʿīd—meaning Saʿīd al-Maqburī—from Abū Hurayrah, reported:
The Prophet ﷺ said: “There are three traits; whoever possesses them is a hypocrite: when he speaks he lies, when he makes a promise he breaks it, and when he is entrusted he betrays the trust.”
A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, two of them have left me and one remains?”
He replied, “He still bears a branch of hypocrisy so long as any one of them remains in him.” (2)
This hadith has a fair chain.
As for Abū Maʿshar Najīḥ al-Sindī, he is truthful in himself, though not strong enough to serve as independent proof.
Regarding the text, it has also been transmitted by a number of other narrators from Abū Hurayrah.
