Narrations on His Authority:
I read to Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn Aḥmad ibn Niʿmah al-Maqdisī—the mufti and preacher of Damascus—on the authority of Imām Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad al-Suhrawardī. I then read in Damascus to Abū al-Maʿālī Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq, the Qur’an-reciter, who said:
ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad related to us in the year 620 AH; Abū al-Muẓaffar Hibat Allāh ibn Aḥmad al-Shiblī also related to us (ḥ).
Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Hāshimī in Alexandria narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Mujallad narrated to us; they said:
Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Zaynabī informed us; Abū Ṭāhir Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Dhahabī informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Baghawī related to us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥanbal ibn Hilāl ibn Asad, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Shaybānī, narrated to us; he said:
Yahyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us from Shuʿbah, who said:
Abū Jamrah informed me; he said: I heard Ibn ʿAbbās say:
“The delegation of ʿAbd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he instructed them to have faith in Allah. He said, ‘Do you know what faith in Allah is?’
“They replied, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’
“He said, ‘It is to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah; to establish the prayer; to give the zakāt; to fast in Ramadan; and to hand over one-fifth of the spoils (1).’ ”
Agreed upon.
It was also recorded by Abū Dāwūd from Aḥmad.
