then Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Sulamī narrated to us; I also heard Ṭālūt ibn Luqmān, and he related the same account.
Musabbiḥ ibn Ḥātim al-ʿUklī said: Ibrāhīm ibn Jaʿfar al-Marwadhī narrated to us. He said, “I saw Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal in a dream walking with a proud, swaggering gait. I asked him, ‘What is this walk, O Abū ʿAbd Allāh?’ He answered, ‘This is the walk of the attendants in the Abode of Peace.’
Al-Marwadhī likewise said: “I saw Aḥmad in a dream, clad in two green garments and wearing a crown of light upon his head. He was walking in a manner I did not recognize, so I asked, ‘What is this?’ He replied, ‘This is the walk of the attendants in the Abode of Peace.’” He then recounted the story with its useful chain of transmission.
In al-Ḥilyah it is recorded: Abū Naṣr al-Ḥanbalī informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad al-Nahrawānī informed us; Abū al-Qāsim al-Qurashī narrated to us; and al-Marwadhī transmitted a similar report.
Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khafīf the Sufi said: Abū al-Qāsim al-Qaṣrī narrated to us; I heard Ibn Khuzaymah in Alexandria say, “I saw Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal in a dream after his death, strutting proudly. I asked, ‘What is this gait?’ He replied, ‘It is the gait of the attendants in the Abode of Peace.’ I then asked, ‘What has Allah done with you?’ He said, ‘He forgave me, crowned me, and placed upon my feet two sandals of gold. Then He said: “O Aḥmad, this is because of your declaration: The Qur’an is My Speech.” After that He said to me, “O Aḥmad, why did you transmit from Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān?”—and he went on to mention a long, objectionable story. And how could Ḥarīz ever be compared to Aḥmad?!”
Ibn Qudāmah informed us, from Ibn al-Jawzī: al-Mubārak ibn ʿAlī informed us; Saʿd Allāh ibn ʿAlī ibn Ayyūb narrated to us; Hannād ibn Ibrāhīm informed us; Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Takrītī narrated to us; Abū Bakr al-Tamīmī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bahrām said, “I saw Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal in a dream wearing two golden sandals and walking with a graceful swagger …” and he told the rest of the story.
