the one that is thickly padded—yet he pays no heed to the heat; and we have also seen him come out to us in bitter cold wearing nothing but two light garments, equally unconcerned about the cold. Have you ever heard anything about that?”
I replied, “No.” They said, “Ask your father, for he spends the evenings with him.” I questioned my father, and he said, “I have heard nothing about it.”
He then went in to ʿAlī, spent the evening talking with him, and asked him. ʿAlī said, “Did you not take part with us at Khaybar?” He answered, “Indeed I did.” ʿAlī continued, “Do you remember when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned Abū Bakr, tied the banner for him, and sent him against the people? He went, met them, and came back with his men after being routed.” He said, “Yes.” ʿAlī went on, “Then he sent for ʿUmar, tied the banner for him, and dispatched him against the people. He went, met them and fought them, then returned, also routed. It was then that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, ‘Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man whom Allah and His Messenger love, and who loves Allah and His Messenger; through him Allah will grant victory; he does not flee.’ He then called me, gave me the banner, and prayed, ‘O Allah, protect him from heat and cold.’ From that moment I have never felt heat or cold.”
Abū ʿAwana related, from Mughīra al-Ḍabbī, from Umm Mūsā, who said: “I heard ʿAlī say: ‘Since the day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed the banner in my hand at Khaybar, I have never suffered eye inflammation nor headache.’”
Abū Dāwūd al-Tayālisī recorded this report in his Musnad.
Section: Those who state that Marhab was killed by Muḥammad ibn Maslama.
Mūsā ibn ʿUqba narrated, on the authority of Ibn Shihāb, that on the day of Khaybar the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and exhorted the people. The Jews then came out with their champion; when the champion of the Jews was slain they were put to flight. Muḥammad ibn Maslama al-Ashhalī killed Marhab the Jew.
