“I am the one my mother called Ḥaydarah,
A lion of the thickets, fearsome to behold;
I shall requite them in full, measure for measure.”
With that, ʿAlī struck Marhab, split his head, and killed him, and the fortress was taken. Muslim relates this report.
Al-Bakkāʾī said: Ibn Isḥāq told me—Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī narrated from Abū al-Haytham ibn Naṣr al-Aslamī, from his father—that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say to ʿĀmir ibn al-Akwaʿ while on the march to Khaybar, “Let us have something of your verses.” ʿĀmir dismounted and began to chant:
“By Allah, were it not for Allah we would not have been guided,
Nor given charity, nor offered prayer.
When a people transgress against us, we resist;
And if they seek sedition, we refuse.
Send down upon us tranquillity,
And make firm our feet when we meet the foe.”
The Messenger of Allah said, “May Allah have mercy on you.” ʿUmar remarked, “By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, it is now certain; would that you had let us enjoy him a little longer.” ʿĀmir was martyred on the day of Khaybar.
Yūnus ibn Bukayr reports from Ibn Isḥāq: ʿĀmir ibn Sufyān ibn Furwah al-Aslamī told me, from his father, from Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ, who said: ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, came out with the banner at a run, while we followed behind until he planted it in a cairn of stones beneath the fortress. A Jew looked down from the top of the stronghold and called out, “Who are you?” He replied, “I am ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib.” The Jew said, “You have conquered”—and in al-Bakkāʾī’s wording: “You have prevailed”—“by that which was revealed to Moses.” ʿAlī did not return until Allah granted victory through him.
Yūnus ibn Bukayr also relates, from al-Musayyib ibn Muslim al-Azdī: ʿAbd Allah narrated to us
