It is related from Abū Juhaim that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Do not quarrel about the Quran, for quarrelling over it is disbelief.” (1)
Ibn ʿAbbās narrated: A man once came to ʿUmar, and ʿUmar began asking him about the people. The man said, “Commander of the Believers, such-and-such a number of them have recited the Quran.” Ibn ʿAbbās continued: I then said, “By Allah, I do not like them to hurry through the Quran with such headlong haste in a single day.” ʿUmar rebuked me and said, “Enough!”
So I went home, dejected and sorrowful. While I was in that state, a man came to me and said, “Answer the summons of the Commander of the Believers.” I went out and found ʿUmar waiting for me at the door. He took me by the hand, withdrew with me in private, and asked, “What was it that you disliked?”
I replied, “Commander of the Believers, whenever they rush through the Quran in this manner, they will read it carelessly (2); once they read it carelessly, they will dispute; once they dispute, they will differ; and once they differ, they will fight.”
He said, “May your father be blessed! By Allah, I had been concealing this concern from the people until you voiced it.”
It is also related from Jābir that the Prophet ﷺ used to present himself to the people at the standing place during the pilgrimage, saying, “Is there anyone who will take me to his people? Quraysh have prevented me from delivering my Lord’s words.” (3)
