of your own selves. We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of al-Hudaybiyah, and had we seen any call to fight, we would certainly have fought.
Then ʿUmar came and said, “Are we not on the truth while they are upon falsehood?” He replied, “Indeed.” ʿUmar continued, “Are not those of us who are killed in Paradise, and those of them who are killed in the Fire?” He said, “Indeed.” ʿUmar said, “Then why should we accept humiliation and go back before Allah has judged between us and them?” He answered, “O son of al-Khattāb, I am the Messenger of Allah, and Allah will never forsake me.” ʿUmar left in anger and went to Abū Bakr, repeating to him what he had just said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then the Qurʾān was revealed, and the Prophet ﷺ sent for ʿUmar and recited it to him. ʿUmar asked, “Messenger of Allah, is this a conquest?” He said, “Yes.” So ʿUmar’s spirit was soothed, and he returned. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, “O Allah, forgive those who shave.” Someone said, “Messenger of Allah, and those who trim?” He replied, “Forgive those who shave,” three times. They said, “Messenger of Allah, and those who trim?” He said, “And those who trim.”
Yūnus further related—from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Najīḥ told me, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with him—that he was asked, “Why did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ invoke blessing for the shavers three times but for the trimmers only once?” He answered, “Because the shavers never hesitated.”
Yūnus—namely Ibn Bukayr—also narrated, through Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Ibrāhīm, from Abū Saʿīd, who said: “The Companions of the Messenger…"
