Yaʿqūb is the sole transmitter of this report. It has also been narrated by Shuʿbah and Hushaym from Yaʿlā.
Al-Bukhārī says in his Ṣaḥīḥ—in two places, in the Book of Reconciliation (1) and in the section on those who witnessed Badr (2): “Yaʿqūb narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd narrated to us,” and the stronger view is that he is the son of
Masud, Burayda, Ibn Abbas, Jabir, Abd Allah b. Salam, al-Nawwas b. Samʿan, and Imran b. Husayn have all transmitted the report. Each individual chain is weak, yet taken together the hadith attains overall authenticity.
Al-Hafiz al-Munziri carefully assembled its various lines of transmission and counted about twenty Companions through whom it is reported.
(1) 5/221. Text: “Yaʿqub narrated to us; Ibrahim b. Saʿd narrated to us, from his father, from al-Qasim b. Muhammad, from ʿAʾisha, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Whoever introduces into our affair something that does not belong to it, it is rejected.’”
Al-Hafiz comments on the phrase “Yaʿqub narrated to us”: in most copies the name is left without further identification, while Ibn al-Sakan alone specifies Yaʿqub b. Muhammad.
A similar case occurs in the Book of Maghazi, chapter “The merit of those who witnessed Badr.” Al-Bukhari there writes, “Yaʿqub narrated to us; Ibrahim b. Saʿd narrated to us…”. Ibn al-Sakan again identifies him as Yaʿqub b. Muhammad al-Zuhri, whereas the majority of manuscripts omit the patronymic.
Abu Dharr, however, in his recension of the Maghazi, reads: Yaʿqub b. Ibrahim—that is, al-Dawraqi.
In the Book of Purification, al-Bukhari also relates from Yaʿqub b. Ibrahim, from Ismaʿil b. ʿUlayya; Abu Dharr likewise specifies him there as al-Dawraqi.
Al-Hakim is categorical that the Yaʿqub meant here is Ibn Muhammad, following the wording found in Ibn al-Sakan’s copy.
Abu Ahmad al-Hakim, Ibn Mandah, al-Habbal and others contend that he is Yaʿqub b. Humayd b. Kasib, but al-Burqani rejects this because Yaʿqub b. Humayd does not meet al-Bukhari’s strict criteria.
Abu Masʿud suggested he might be Yaʿqub b. Ibrahim b. Saʿd; this is refuted on the grounds that al-Bukhari never met him, as he died before al-Bukhari began his travels. Al-Burqani replies by allowing for a missing intermediary, yet this remains unlikely.
In my estimation the strongest view is that he is al-Dawraqi, for al-Bukhari’s practice is not to omit a narrator’s lineage unless he has already given it elsewhere.
Abu ʿAli al-Sadafi explicitly affirms that the narrator is al-Dawraqi, and Abu Nuʿaym, in his Mustakhraj, likewise states that al-Bukhari transmitted the hadith in the Book of Sulh through Yaʿqub b. Ibrahim.
(2) 7/239, Book of Maghazi, chapter “The merit of those who witnessed Badr.” Text: “Yaʿqub narrated to me; Ibrahim b. Saʿd narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: ʿAbd al-Rahman b. ʿAwf related: ‘While I was in the battle-line on the day of Badr, I looked to my right and left and saw two very young boys. I felt uneasy at their presence when one of them, speaking so the other would not hear, said, ‘Uncle, show me Abu Jahl.’ I said, ‘Nephew, what will you do with him?’ He replied, ‘I have vowed to Allah that if I see him I shall kill him or die trying.’ The other boy then said the same to me in private. Nothing would have pleased me more than to stand between two men such as these. I pointed Abu Jahl out to them, and they swooped on him like two falcons until they struck him down; they were the sons of ʿAfra.’”
That the name Yaʿqub appears here without further lineage is the reading found in manuscripts other than those of Abu Dharr and al-Isili; the latter two give it as Yaʿqub b. Ibrahim.
