63 – Ibn Kāsib Yaʿqūb ibn Ḥumayd al-Madanī * (q)
The ḥāfiẓ and eminent hadith scholar, Abū al-Faḍl Yaʿqūb ibn Ḥumayd ibn Kāsib al-Madanī, who later resided in Mecca.
He narrated from Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Ḥāzim, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb, al-Darāwardī, Ibn ʿUyaynah, and many others.
Those who reported from him include Ibn Mājah, Ismāʿīl al-Qāḍī, Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim, al-Bukhārī outside the Ṣaḥīḥ—and, to the best of my knowledge, within the Ṣaḥīḥ as well—ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and many others besides them.
He was numbered among the imams of transmitted reports, even though a great many objectionable narrations (manākir) come through him.
Al-Bukhārī said, “We saw nothing but good in him.”
Abū Ḥātim declared, “Weak in hadith.”
Al-Nasāʾī said, “He is of no account.”
Muḍar ibn Muḥammad reported that Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn judged him “reliable”—so Muḍar maintained. ʿAbbās al-Dūrī, however, transmitted from Yaḥyā that he said, “Not reliable.”
When Abū Zurʿah was asked about him, he merely shook his head.
Al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mahdī related: “I asked Abū Muṣʿab, ‘From whom should I write in Mecca?’ He answered, ‘You should study with our shaykh Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb ibn Ḥumayd.’”
