then Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Hamīd would be left entirely to me.’ I (the narrator) said: In the end he survived Isḥāq only five months.

Al-Dāraquṭnī relates: Aḥmad ibn Kāmil informed us, saying, ‘al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥubāb narrated to me that ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah, while reading the Qurʾānic commentary to them, recited, “Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the People of the Elephant” (Q. 105:1), but rendered it as “Alif. Lām. Mīm.”’

I comment: This was either a slip of the tongue or an impermissible jest.

Judge ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Kās said: Ibrāhīm al-Khaṣṣāf told us:
‘While ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah was teaching us the commentary on the verse, “When he had furnished them with their provisions he placed—” he read “the ship,” and when the students called out, “the goblet” (cf. Q. 12:70), he said, “My brother and I do not follow ʿĀṣim’s reading.”’

Al-Bukhārī cites him frequently in his Ṣaḥīḥ.

I add: He was an elderly man who did not dye his beard, and his brother had a more retentive memory than he.

Muṭayyin said: ʿUthmān died on the third of Muḥarram, 239 AH.

In the same year passed away: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn Abān in Kūfah; Ḥakīm ibn Sayf in al-Raqqah; al-Ḥasan ibn Ḥammād al-Warrāq, nicknamed “al-Ṣīnī”; Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbās, keeper of al-Shāmah; Muḥammad ibn Mihrān al-Rāzī al-Jamālī; Wahb ibn Baqīyah; al-Ṣalt ibn Masʿūd al-Jahdarī, judge of Samarrāʾ; Dāwūd ibn Rushayd; Maḥmūd ibn Ghaylān; Muḥammad ibn al-Naḍr ibn Musāwir; and Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf al-Balkhī.

ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ and Yūsuf al-Ḥajjār told us:
Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir informed us; Saʿīd ibn al-Bannāʾ informed us; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us, together with Ibn Idrīs and Jarīr, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘During the night there is a moment in which, if a Muslim man happens to coincide with it while asking Allah, Exalted is He, for…’
