It was also recorded by the rest of the compilers (1)—with the exception of the Qazwīnī—through several chains from Ismāʿīl, with similar wording.
Yaḥyā ibn Abī Manṣūr, Ibn ʿAllān, and a group of others informed us, saying:
ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Hibat Allāh ibn al-Ḥuṣayn narrated to us; Ibn Ghaylān narrated to us; Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥāḍir narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā al-Farrāʾ narrated to us; ʿAbbād ibn al-ʿAwwām narrated to us, from ʿUmar ibn Ibrāhīm, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from al-Aḥnaf, from al-ʿAbbās, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “My community will remain upon the fiṭrah (innate sound nature) so long as they do not delay the sunset (maghrib) prayer until the stars become intermingled.”
Ibn Mājah also recorded it (2) from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā, from al-Fidāʾ.
Imam Aḥmad said, “This ḥadith is munkar (anomalous).”
I say: ʿUmar is worthless.
I read to Ibn ʿAsākir (3), from Abū Rūḥ; Zāhir informed us; Abū Yaʿlā al-Ṣābūnī informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Rāzī informed us; Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb informed us—
(1) Reported by al-Bukhari, Sahih, Book of Tafsir, commentary on Surat al-Baqarah, chapter “And stand before Allah devoutly” (8/149); and in the Book of Actions in Prayer, chapter “What is forbidden of speech during the prayer.” Also by al-Tirmidhi, Sunan, no. 405 (Book of Prayer, chapter on the abrogation of talking in prayer) and no. 2989 (Book of Tafsir); by Abu Dawud, Sunan, no. 949; and by al-Nasa’i, Sunan, 3/18 (Book of Speech in Prayer).
(2) Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 689, and al-Darimi, 1/275. All the transmitters are trustworthy except ‘Umar b. Ibrahim, who is reliable but tends to confuse the reports he narrates from Qatada. The author, may Allah have mercy on him, was perhaps unduly severe in labeling ‘Umar “worthless,” especially since the hadith has a sound corroborating chain: Abu Dawud, Sunan, no. 418 (Book of Prayer, chapter on the time of Maghrib) and Ahmad, Musnad, 4/147; 5/417, 422, through Ibn Ishaq—who here explicitly says “he narrated to me”—from Yazid b. Abi Habib, from Marthad b. ‘Abd Allah, from Abu Ayyub and ‘Uqba b. ‘Amir. The Prophet ﷺ said: “My community will remain in good shape— or he said: on the natural disposition— so long as they do not delay Maghrib until the stars become intertwined.” This chain is strong; al-Hakim (1/190–191) declared it authentic and al-Dhahabi concurred. The author himself cited the earlier report of al-‘Abbas as a supporting narration.
(3) Ahmad b. Hibat Allah b. Ahmad b. Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Hibat Allah b. ‘Abd Allah, known as al-Ma‘mar, honorific Abū al-Fadl al-Dimashqi, came from a family noted for learning and probity. Born in 614/1217–18, he died in 699/1299–1300. The author provides his biography in his work of scholarly transmissions (Mashyakhah), fol. 20/2.
