Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Tirmidhī; Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī; Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī; Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ṭayālisī; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Junayd; Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb ibn al-Ḍurays al-Bajalī; Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Baytān; ʿAbd Allah ibn Ḥāḍir—one of Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī’s teachers—and many others besides.
Abū Zurʿah said, “He is more precise than Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah, his ḥadith are sounder, and his memory is better than that of Ṣafwān ibn Ṣāliḥ the muʾadhdhin.”
Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad Jazrah related: “I heard Abū Zurʿah say, ‘I wrote down one hundred thousand ḥadith from Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā, and the same number from Ibn Abī Shaybah.’”
Abū Ḥātim remarked, “He is among the reliable transmitters; he is more exact than Muḥammad ibn Mihrān al-Jammāl.”
Al-Nasāʾī said, “Trustworthy.”
I say: He died about the year thirty, i.e. circa 230 AH.
I read to Muḥammad ibn Ḥusayn al-Qurashī, who said: Muḥammad ibn ʿImād informs you; ʿAbd Allah ibn Rifāʿah narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Khilaʿī narrated to us; Abū Saʿd Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Harawī, the ḥāfiẓ, narrated to us; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Abū Yaḥyā Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Baytān informed me; Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā al-Farrāʾ narrated to us; ʿĪsā—meaning Ibn Yūnus—narrated to us from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from al-Ḥārith ibn Shubayl, from Abū ʿAmr al-Shaybānī, who said:
Zayd ibn Arqam told me: “During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to speak in the prayer—one of us would address his companion about whatever he needed—until the verse was revealed: ‘Guard the prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience’ (Qur’an 2:238). After that we were commanded to remain silent.”
