Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Muḥammad ibn Qirāṭ, Badr ibn al-Haytham of Damascus, Jaʿfar al-Firyābī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy al-Khwārizmī the judge, the two Abū Zurʿahs (1), ʿUthmān ibn Khurrādhād, ʿAmr ibn Abī Zurʿah of Damascus, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn al-Ḥarīṣ, Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Sumayʿ, and many others besides.

Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said, “There is nothing objectionable about him, though Hishām ibn ʿAmmār is shrewder than he.” Abū Ḥātim transmitted this remark from him, and then added: “Sulaymān is truthful and his ḥadith are straight, but he relates more than anyone else from weak and unknown narrators. Hishām would then say, ‘So-and-so related this to me; it has already been transmitted—I do not care who bears the blame for the error.’ ”

Abū Dāwūd also said: “Sulaymān is reliable; he makes mistakes as people do.” Someone asked him, “Is he a ḥujjah?” He replied, “The ḥujjah is Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal.”

Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ reported from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn: “He is trustworthy when he narrates from well-known transmitters.”

Yaʿqūb al-Fasawī said: “His written copy was sound, but he used to transpose—so if…"
