50 – Sulaymān, the son of the daughter of Shuraḥbīl ibn Muslim al-Khawlānī * (Kh, 4)
He was the Imām, the scholar, the ḥāfiẓ, and the leading ḥadīth authority of Damascus: Abū Ayyūb Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿĪsā ibn Maymūn ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Tamīmī, the Damascene.
His maternal grandfather was Shuraḥbīl ibn Muslim al-Khawlānī, a ḥadīth transmitter of the second generation from Ḥimṣ, teacher of Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh and Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, and one of the stalwarts of ḥadīth.
He narrated from: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl, Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd, ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus, Maslamah ibn ʿAlī, Yaḥyā ibn Ḥamzah, al-Walīd ibn Muslim, Bishr ibn ʿAwf, Khālid ibn Yazīd ibn Abī Mālik, Saʿdān ibn Yaḥyā, Suwayd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Rijāl, ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad al-Ṣanʿānī, ʿUmar ibn al-Wāḥid al-Naṣrī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Abī Mālik, Muḥammad ibn Ḥimyar, Maʿrūf the tailor—the freedman of Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ—and many others.
So broad-minded was he that he even related ḥadīth from the ḥāfiẓ Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Ashʿarī, although the latter had been his own pupil.
Those who transmitted from him include: al-Bukhārī, Abū Dāwūd, Abū ʿUbayd al-Qāsim ibn Sallām, Maḥmūd ibn Khālid, Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī, Abū Isḥāq al-Jawzajānī, Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Junayd al-Khuttalī, Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Sunayn al-Khuttalī, Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Tirmidhī, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad—the nephew of Hishām ibn ʿAmmār—Aḥmad ibn al-Muʿallā the judge, and Abū Quṣayy Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad al-ʿUdhri.
