He transmitted hadith from Juwayriya ibn Asmaʾ, Nafiʿ ibn ʿUmar al-Jumahi, Abu Maʿshar Najih al-Sindi, Hammad ibn Zayd, Sharik the judge, Ismaʿil ibn ʿAyyash, Muhammad ibn Muslim al-Taʾifi, ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad, Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr, and many others besides them.

Al-Baghawi said: “The trustworthy, reliable Dawud ibn ʿAmr narrated to us.”
Yahya ibn Maʿin said: “There is nothing objectionable about him.”
Al-Baghawi reported so many traditions from him that the more light-hearted students used to joke, “In the house of Abu al-Qasim, grandson of Maniʿ, there is a tree that produces Dawud ibn ʿAmr al-Dabbi.”
Al-Khatib and others said: “Dawud died in Rabiʿ al-Awwal of the year 228 AH.” It was also said that he passed away in Safar.
Al-Nasaʾi recorded a narration from him in his Sunan.
