al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥizāmī; Ṣadaqah ibn Bashīr; and many others.

Those who transmitted from him include al-Bukhārī in the Ṣaḥīḥ; ʿAbd Allah ibn Shabīb; al-Rabīʿ al-Murādī; al-Faḍl ibn Muḥammad al-Shaʿrānī; Abū Zurʿah; and a number of others.

Abū Ḥātim said: “Abū Zurʿah met him and exchanged with him some rare narrations that Abū Zurʿah did not already have. He therefore asked him to relate them, went to see him, and examined his notebooks.”

Ibn Ḥibbān listed him in al-Thiqāt, remarking, “He would occasionally disagree.”

Ibn Abī Dāwūd said: “Weak.”

Abū Zurʿah also said: “There was not much time between the beginning of his public narration and his death. I visited him for twenty nights, looking through his books.”

47 – Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf, Abū ʿAlī al-Marwazī * (Kh, M, D)

The Imām, exemplar, and trustworthy authority: Abū ʿAlī al-Marwazī, later of Baghdad, originally a silk dealer and eventually known as ‘the Blind.’

He transmitted hadith from Hushaym; Yaḥyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah; Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Darāwardī; Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh; ʿAbd Allah ibn Wahb; al-Walīd ibn Muslim; Marwān ibn Shujāʿ; and others of their tier among the scholars of the Ḥijāz, Syria, Egypt, al-Jazīrah, and Iraq.

He devoted himself to this discipline, assembling and compiling hadith collections.

Among those who narrated from him are Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, al-Bukhārī through an intermediary, and Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal.
