made it one hundred dinars.’
He replied, “May Allah reward you abundantly.”
Isḥāq once recited to al-Rashīd some lines in which he said:
My bounty is the bounty of those who lavish gifts in profusion,
while my means—as you well know—are slight.
How could I fear poverty or be denied affluence,
when the counsel of the Commander of the Faithful is august? (1)
al-Rashīd thereupon ordered that one hundred thousand dirhams be given to him.
He passed away in 235 AH.
