Muhammad ibn ʿUbayd Allah al-Mujallad (1) informed us; Abu Nasr al-Zaynabi (2) informed us; Abu Tahir al-Dhahabi informed us; Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi narrated to us; Kamil ibn Talhah narrated to us; Hammad ibn Salamah—through Khalid al-Haddhaʾ, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Shaqiq, from Ibn Abi al-Jadʿaʾ (3)—reported that he said:
“I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, when were you made a prophet?’
He replied, ‘When Adam was between spirit and body.’
Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Muqriʾ informed us; al-Fath ibn ʿAbd al-Salam informed us; Hibat Allah ibn al-Husayn informed us; Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Bazzaz informed us; ʿIsa ibn ʿAli dictated to us; Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Aʿla ibn Hammad, ʿAli ibn al-Jaʿd, Abu Nasr al-Tammar, Kamil ibn Talhah, and ʿUbayd Allah al-ʿAbsi all narrated to us; they said, ‘He informed us…’
(1) Abu Bakr ibn al-Zaguni, Muhammad ibn Ubayd Allah ibn Nasr al-Baghdadi, nicknamed al-Mujallad; he died in 552 AH/1157 CE. See al-Dhahabi, al-Ibar, 4:150, and Ibn al-Imad, Shadharat al-Dhahab, 4:164.
(2) Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Muhammad … al-Zaynabi, so called after Zaynab bint Sulayman ibn Ali. He narrated from Abu Tahir al-Mukhlis and others and died sometime in the early 470s AH/1080s CE. See al-Ibar, 3:295, and Shadharat al-Dhahab, 3:364.
(3) Abdullah: biographical notices in Usd al-Ghabah, 3:196, and al-Isabah, 6:36. The isnad of the following hadith is reliable. Ibn Saʿd records it in al-Tabaqat, 7:59, through ʿAffan ibn Muslim and ʿAmr ibn ʿAsim al-Kilabi, both from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Khalid al-Hadhaʾ, from Abdullah ibn Shuqayq, from Abdullah ibn Abi al-Jadʿa. Al-Tirmidhi also transmits it (no. 3609, “Book of Merits”) via al-Walid ibn Muslim, from al-Awzaʿi, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah: they asked, “Messenger of Allah, when was prophethood ordained for you?” He replied, “While Adam was between spirit and body.” Al-Tirmidhi comments: “This hadith is hasan sahih gharib; we know it only through this chain.”
Further attestations: the report of Maysarah al-Fajr appears in Ahmad, 5:59, with a strong chain according to Ibn Hajar (Fath al-Bari). Al-Haythami cites it in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid, 8:223, noting that Ahmad and al-Tabarani transmit it with narrators found in the two Sahihs. Another route comes from Abdullah ibn Shuqayq, via an unnamed man who asked the Prophet the same question and received the same reply; its chain is sound.
Ibn Hajar (al-Isabah, 9:304) states that the unnamed Companion is probably Abdullah ibn Abi al-Jadʿa, whose laqab is Maysarah. A version from Ibn ʿAbbas is mentioned by al-Haythami; it is transmitted by al-Tabarani (al-Awsat) and al-Bazzar, but includes Jabir ibn Yazid al-Juʿfi, who is weak.
