31 – Shaybān ibn Farrūkh, Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥabaṭī * (M, D)
He is Shaybān ibn Abī Shaybah, the ḥadīth scholar, ḥāfiẓ, and reliable transmitter; Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥabaṭī, their freedman, from Ubulla in Basra, the foremost musnid of his generation.
Born: 140 AH.
He studied under Ḥammād ibn Salamah, Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim, Mubārak ibn Faḍālah, Abān ibn Yazīd al-ʿAṭṭār, Muḥammad ibn Rāshid al-Makḥūlī, Abū al-Ashhab al-ʿAṭāridī, Sallām ibn Miskīn, and others of their rank.
He was counted among the great repositories of knowledge.
Those who narrated from him include Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, Jaʿfar al-Firyābī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh Muṭayyin, al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān, Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī, ʿAbdān al-Ahwāzī, Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Bāghandī, Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī, Muḥammad ibn Shādhil, Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim, Muḥammad ibn Jābir al-Marwazī, Aḥmad ibn al-Naṣr al-Naysābūrī, Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā “the Weaver of the Sunnah,” Muḥammad ibn Naṣr al-Marwazī the jurist, Yūsuf ibn Yaʿqūb the judge, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Shabīb al-Maʿmarī, and many others.
I know of no fault in him, nor did the critics object to anything about him, though he did not attain the very highest tier.
ʿAbdān said: “He had fifty thousand ḥadīths, and, in their estimation, he was more accurate than Hudbah ibn Khālid.”
Abū Zurʿah mentioned him, saying: “Trustworthy.”
