I say: The scholars disagreed over the year of his death. Abū Dāwūd transmitted from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik that he died in 235 AH. Ibn Ḥibbān said, “He died in 236 or 237.” Others maintained it was 238.
Among the higher-level isnāds that go back to him is the following:
“Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq informed us; al-Fath ibn ʿAbd Allāh informed us; Hibat Allāh ibn al-Ḥusayn informed us; Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn an-Naqqūr narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn ʿAlī dictated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad related to us; Hudbah ibn Khālid related to us; Suhayl ibn Abī Ḥazm related, from Thābit, from Anas:
that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, concerning the verse, ‘He alone is worthy of being feared and worthy of granting forgiveness’ (al-Muddaththir 56), said:
‘Your Lord says: I am indeed worthy to be feared—so let none be associated with Me. And I am indeed worthy, when the one who fears associating anything with Me avoids it, that I forgive him.’ (1)”
It was also conveyed to us by Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq; al-Fath; al-Ṭarāʾifī, Ibn al-Dāyah, and the judge al-Urmawī. They said: “Ibn al-Muslimah informed us; ʿUbayd Allāh al-Zuhri informed us; Jaʿfar al-Firyābī informed us; Hudbah informed us; Hammām related to us; Qatādah related from Anas, from Abū Mūsā:
that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘The likeness of the believer who recites the Qur’an is that of the utrujjah (citron)…’ and he completed the ḥadīth. (2)"
