Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Abu Kudaynah narrated—through Ataʾ ibn al-Saʾib, from Abu al-Duha, from Ibn Abbas—that a vessel of water was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He put his fingers at the mouth of the vessel and spread them apart, and I saw springs gush forth from between his fingers. He related the remainder of the report. Its chain of transmission is good.

Ibn Lahiʿah reported: Abu al-Aswad told us that Urwah, concerning the Prophet’s ﷺ encampment at al-Hudaybiyyah, said: When Quraysh panicked at his arrival, he wished to send someone to them. He called for Umar in order to dispatch him, but Umar said, “I do not feel safe with them, and there is no one in Mecca from Banu Kaʿb who would defend me. Rather, send Uthman, for his clan is there.” So he summoned Uthman, sent him off, and said, “Tell them we have not come to fight; invite them to Islam.” He also instructed him to visit the believing men and women in Mecca, enter upon them, and give them the glad tidings of victory.

Uthman set out and encountered Quraysh at Baldah. They asked, “Where are you heading?” He replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to call you to Islam and to inform you that we have not come to fight; we have come only as pilgrims.” Uthman then conveyed the invitation exactly as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered. They said, “We have heard what you say; go about your business.” Aban ibn Saʿid ibn al-As approached, welcomed him, saddled his horse, mounted Uthman on it, guaranteed his safety, and rode pillion behind him until they reached Mecca.

Quraysh then dispatched Budayl ibn Warqaʾ. The report continues with the negotiation and the truce, mentioning that both sides granted one another security and exchanged visits. While matters stood thus, and groups of Muslims were mingling among the polytheists, a man from one side struck a man from the other. Fighting flared; they pelted each other with arrows and stones, both parties shouted, and each side seized hostages from the other. The Muslims took Suhayl ibn Amr and others, whereas the polytheists took Uthman and others.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then called the people to pledge allegiance, and a herald of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaimed, “Lo, indeed…"
