Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

of ʿUtbah ibn Farqad (1)—both of them are sound.

ʿAbbās al-Dūrī said: Yahyā ibn Maʿīn narrated to us, saying:
“I attended Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād (2) in Egypt. He started to read from a book he had compiled, saying, ‘Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us from Ibn ʿAwn…,’ and he mentioned a number of reports.

I said to him, ‘These are not from Ibn al-Mubārak.’

He became angry and said, ‘You are contradicting me?’

I replied, ‘Yes, by Allah; I only want what is best for you.’

He refused to retract. When I saw that he would not pull back, I said, ‘By Allah, you did not hear these from Ibn al-Mubārak, nor did he ever hear them from Ibn ʿAwn.’

He grew angry, as did those who were with him. He stood up, went inside, and brought out some folios, then began

Two-thirds of its two impurities disappear: one third with its smell and one third with its boiling foam. Order those who are with you to drink it. According to the route of Saʿid b. al-Musayyib, ʿUmar declared permissible any beverage that had been cooked until two-thirds had evaporated and one third remained. Al-Nasaʾi (8/329) reports, through the chain of ʿAbd Allah b. Yazid al-Khatmi, that ʿUmar wrote: “Boil your drink until the devil’s share is gone from it, for the devil has two shares and you have one.” Ibn Ḥajar said in Fatḥ al-Bari 10/55, after citing these traditions: “Their chains are sound, and some of them make it explicit that the only objectionable element is *sukr* (intoxication); therefore, whenever it intoxicates, it is unlawful.” (1) ʿUtbah b. Farqad was a Companion; see Asad al-ghaba 3/567-568, al-Isaba 6/379-380, and al-Istiʿab 8/14. We have not located the hadith to which Yahya b. Saʿid refers. In the six canonical collections he transmits only one report, found in al-Nasaʾi 4/129-130 on fasting. Al-Nasaʾi records it through Muhammad b. Mansur, who said: Sufyan b. ʿAtaʾ b. al-Saʾib related to us from ʿArfaja: “We visited ʿUtbah b. Farqad and began discussing the month of Ramadan. He asked, ‘What are you talking about?’ We replied, ‘The month of Ramadan.’ He said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: In it the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, the devils are chained, and a herald calls every night: O seeker of good, advance! O seeker of evil, desist!’” Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Nasaʾi commented: “This wording is incorrect. Muhammad b. Bashar informed us that Muhammad related to us: Shuʿbah transmitted from ʿAtaʾ b. al-Saʾib, from ʿArfaja, who said: I was in a house that contained ʿUtbah b. Farqad. I wished to narrate a hadith, but there was a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ who had more right to do so. The man then narrated from the Prophet ﷺ: ‘In Ramadan the gates of heaven are opened, the gates of Hell are shut, every obstinate devil is shackled, and a caller proclaims each night: O seeker of good, come forward; O seeker of evil, hold back.’” If this is the report meant, its chain is sound, because both Sufyan and Shuʿbah heard from ʿAtaʾ b. al-Saʾib before his memory deteriorated. (2) He is al-Khuzaʿi, one of the eminent imams; although there is some weakness in his narrations, Ahmad and others deemed him reliable. See his biography in the author’s Mizān 4/267 and in Tarikh Baghdad 13/306.
