and the people performed ablution. We asked, “How many were there?” He replied, “Eighty or a little more.” Recorded by al-Bukhari.
Another report states that this took place at Qubāʾ.
Ibn Abī ʿArūbah narrated from Qatādah, from Anas, that the Prophet ﷺ was at al-Zawrāʾ performing ablution. He placed his hand in the water, whereupon it gushed out between his fingers until everyone had completed their ablution. We said to Anas, “How many were you?” He answered, “About three hundred.” Recorded by Muslim, and al-Bukhari relates the same meaning. Al-Zawrāʾ is a spot in Madinah near the market and the mosque.
Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqriʾ said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ziyād narrated to us, saying: Ziyād ibn Naʿīm al-Ḥaḍramī told me, saying: I heard Ziyād ibn al-Ḥārith al-Ṣudāʾī say, “I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ …” He recounted a long ḥadīth, part of which reads: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand in the water, and I saw a spring bubbling up between two of his fingers. He then said to me, ‘Were it not that I feel shy before my Lord, we would drink our fill and give others to drink.’” (ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is weak.)
These ḥadīths demonstrate that the blessing imparted to water occurred on several occasions.
Isrāʾīl narrated from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbd Allah, who said: “We used to eat with the Prophet ﷺ and could hear the food glorifying Allah. A vessel was then brought, and water flowed from between his fingers ﷺ. He said, ‘Come to the blessed purification; blessing has descended from heaven,’ and we all performed ablution.” Recorded by al-Bukhari.
