from me, for I maintain that faith is made up of words and deeds.”
I say: He was among the leading authorities of the Ḥanafī school.
Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṣiddīq said: I heard him declare, “The Quran is the speech of Allah; whoever says that it is created is a disbeliever, and whoever withholds judgment is a Jahmite.”
Abū Yaʿlā al-Khalīlī (1) said: Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf narrated from Mālik, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said, “Every intoxicant is wine.” (2)
He heard nothing else from Mālik, because when he attended a lesson in which Qutaybah was present, Qutaybah said to Mālik, “This man is a Murjiʾ.” He was therefore removed from the gathering, which bred enmity between him and Qutaybah. Qutaybah expelled him from Balkh, so he settled in the village of Baghlān.
I add: Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf, the muftī of Balkh, died in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year 239 AH, at more than ninety years of age—may Allah have mercy on him.
26 – Abū Tammām Ḥabīb ibn Aws ibn al-Ḥārith al-Ṭāʾī*
The poet of his age, Abū Tammām Ḥabīb ibn Aws ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Qays al-Ṭāʾī, originally from
(1) Khalil b. Abd Allah b. Khalil al-Qazwini, the eminent hadith master who died in 446 AH. He authored Al-Irshad fi Ulama al-Bilad (A Guide to the Scholars of the Regions), arranging the specialists in hadith and other sciences by locality up to his own time and providing a notice for every city and district. A biographical entry on him appears in Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, 3 / 1123.
(2) In Tahdhib al-Kamāl, under the entry of Ibrahim b. Yusuf, al-Khalili states: “He reported only one hadith from Malik and heard nothing else from him,” then cites the same report recorded here. Muslim includes this hadith in his Sahih (no. 2003), Book of Drinks, chapter “Every intoxicant is wine,” through the chains of transmission of Ayyub, Musa b. Uqba and Ubayd Allah, all from Nafi, from Ibn Umar: “Every intoxicant is wine; every wine is unlawful; every intoxicant is unlawful.”
