Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘If a slave steals, sell him—even for no more than a nash. (1)’

Others who died that same year (237 AH) were: Ḥātim al-Aṣamm the ascetic, Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Shāfiʿī, Saʿīd ibn Ḥafṣ al-Nufaylī, ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Ḥammād, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muʿādh, Abū Kāmil al-Jaḥdarī, Muḥammad ibn Qudāmah al-Jawharī, Wathīmah ibn Mūsā al-Akhbārī, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muṭīʿ.

  1. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Ḥammād ibn Naṣr al-Bāhilī (cited by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and—through an intermediary—al-Nasāʾī)

He was the ḥāfiẓ and hadith authority Abū Yaḥyā al-Bāhilī, their client, known as al-Narsī of Basra.

He heard hadith from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn al-Ward, Wuhaib ibn Khālid, Mālik ibn Anas, Sallām ibn Abī Muṭīʿ, Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ, Ḥammād ibn Zayd, ʿAbd al-Wārith, and a host of others.

Those who reported from him include al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and—through an intermediary—al-Nasāʾī, as well as Abū Ḥātim, Abū Zurʿah, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nājah, Baqī ibn Makhlad, Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā al-Balādhurī, Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim, Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Marwazī, al-Faḍl ibn Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr al-Zubaydī, and Hārūn ibn Muḥammad.

(1) Nash: a piece of rope or any object of trivial worth.

(1) Musnad Ahmad, 2/337, 356, 387; Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 4412, Hudud, “The sale of a slave who has stolen”; Sunan al-Nasai, 8/91, “Cutting (the hand) while travelling”; Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 2589, Hudud, “A slave who steals.” All cite the same isnad: Abu Awana → Umar ibn Abi Salama → his father → Abu Hurayra. The chain is weak because Umar ibn Abi Salama is unreliable. Al-nash: twenty dirhams.
