Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

of Allah, “By Allah, you have discharged your responsibility; by Allah, you handed me back to them, and then Allah rescued me from them.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “May his mother be bereft! He is a spark that would ignite war if only he had supporters.” When Abū Baṣīr heard this, he realized that the Prophet would send him back to them, so he slipped away until he reached Sīf al-Baḥr (the sea-coast).

Abū Jandal ibn Suhayl escaped from them and joined Abū Baṣīr, and every man of Quraysh who had accepted Islam followed Abū Baṣīr until a band of them had gathered.

The narrator said, “By Allah, whenever they heard that a Quraysh caravan was heading for Syria, they would lie in wait for it, kill its guards, and seize its wealth. Quraysh therefore sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, imploring him by Allah and by the bond of kinship to write to those men, guaranteeing that whoever came to Medina would be safe.” The Prophet sent word to them, and Allah revealed: “He it is Who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them…” up to His words, “…the zealotry of pagan ignorance” (al-Fath 24-26). Their zealotry was that they refused to acknowledge the Messenger of Allah, refused to acknowledge “In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Ever-Merciful,” and barred the Muslims from the Sacred House. Al-Bukhārī narrated this at length through al-Masnadī, from ʿAbd al-Razzaq, from Maʿmar.

Qurra narrated, from Abū’z-Zubayr, from Jābir, that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever climbs the pass—Thaniyyat al-Mirār—will have his sins taken from him just as the sins of the Children of Israel were taken from them.” The first to climb were the mounted men of the Banū’l-Khazraj; then the people hastened after them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “All of you are forgiven—except the owner of the red camel.” We said to him, “Come, so that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may seek forgiveness for you.” He replied, “By Allah, finding my lost camel is dearer to me than that your companion seek forgiveness for me.” He was only a man searching for a stray camel. Muslim recorded it.

Al-Bukhārī also said: ʿUbayd Allah ibn Mūsā related to us, from Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ, who said, “You regard the Conquest as the Conquest of Mecca—and indeed the Conquest of Mecca was a conquest—but we consider the Conquest to be the Pledge of Riḍwān on the day of Ḥudaybiya. We were with the Prophet ﷺ—four…"
