ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: Tamīm the tutor and Zāhir the copyist likewise informed us, saying:
“Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān told us; Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ḥīrī told us; al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān told us; Umayya ibn Bisṭām narrated to us; Maʿdiyy ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; Ibn ʿAjlān informed us, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Whoever leaves a funeral procession earns one qīrāṭ; whoever accompanies it earns one qīrāṭ; whoever performs the funeral prayer over it earns one qīrāṭ; and whoever remains seated until it is buried earns one qīrāṭ.’ (1)”
5 – Ḥibbān ibn Mūsā ibn Sawwār al-Sulamī (cited by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Nasāʾī)
A ḥāfiẓ, leading imām, and authoritative proof; Abū Muḥammad al-Sulamī, from Marw, originally of al-Kushmīhān.
He narrated from Abū Ḥamza Muḥammad ibn Maymūn al-Sakkarī, Dāwūd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿAṭṭār, Nūḥ ibn Abī Maryam, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, whose reports he knew thoroughly.
(1) Al-Bazzar also transmitted it (no. 823) through the chain of Muhammad b. al-Muthanna and ʿAbd Allah b. Muhammad b. al-Hajjaj al-Sawwaf, both from Maʿdi b. Sulayman, from Ibn ʿAjlan. Al-Hafiz rates Maʿdi b. Sulayman as weak in Taqrib, and al-Haythami (Majmaʿ, 3/30) likewise judges the report defective on account of him. Nevertheless, the hadith of Abu Hurayra is authentically established through many other chains in the Sahih and elsewhere, though with a different wording. Al-Bukhari (1/100, Book of Faith, “Following funerals is part of faith”) records: “Whoever follows the funeral of a Muslim out of faith and seeking reward, remains until the prayer is performed and the burial completed, returns with two qirats of reward, each qirat the size of Mount Uhud; whoever prays over it and departs before the burial receives one qirat.” He repeats it (3/158, Book of Funerals), and Muslim also transmits it (no. 945): “Whoever attends the funeral until the prayer is offered receives one qirat; whoever stays until it is buried receives two qirats.” Asked, “What are the two qirats?” he answered, “Like two great mountains.” See also Sunan Abi Dawud (3168), al-Tirmidhi (1040), al-Nasaʾi 4/76-77, and Ibn Majah (1539).
