ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd al-Dārimī said: “When ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī came to Baghdad, al-Ḥakam ibn Mūsā related to him the hadith of Abū Qatādah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): ‘The worst thief among people is the one who steals from his prayer.’ ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī remarked, ‘Had anyone other than you narrated it, I would not have let it pass.’
I say: This report is transmitted from him through al-Walīd ibn Muslim, al-Awzāʿī, Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Qatādah, and his father—then the wording is given (1).
Abū ʿUbayd al-Ājurī said: “I asked Abū Dāwūd about the hadith of al-Ḥakam ibn Mūsā concerning the ṣadaqāt (charitable dues), and he replied, ‘I will not relate it.’”
I say: Yet Abū Dāwūd himself cited it in his book al-Marāsīl, through Yaḥyā ibn Ḥamzah, from Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd—so he named him. The correct version, however, is Sulaymān ibn Arqam, as we have explained in detail in al-Mīzān (2).
Al-Ḥakam died in Shawwāl, 232 AH, with two days of the month still remaining.
