Ibn Ḥibbān also listed him in al-Thiqāt. Abū Dāwūd, however, regarded him as unreliable and faulted him for relating the ḥadīth of the Slander (ḥadīth al-ifk) from Mālik (1). Al-Dāraqutnī likewise ruled that he is weak, although al-Bukhārī narrated from him—a point for which people reproach him.
I say: the judgment that carries weight is that of Abū Ḥātim (2). As for his paternal great-uncle, Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh, that man is feeble.
Al-Bukhārī said, “Al-Farwī died in 226 AH” (3). I add: al-Tirmidhī and al-Qazwīnī also included his reports, and in the booklet of Ibn Dayzīl we came across the ḥadīth of the Slander, transmitted from al-Farwī, from Mālik (4).
