224 – Khālid ibn Khalī, Abū al-Qāsim al-Kalāʿī al-Ḥimṣī
Judge, leading authority, and ḥadith master; Abū al-Qāsim al-Kalāʿī of Homs, the qāḍī of his city.
He was born around the year 170 AH.
He heard ḥadith from Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd, Muḥammad ibn Ḥarb, Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-ʿAwṣī, Muḥammad ibn Ḥimyār, and others of their generation.
Among those who transmitted from him are: al-Bukhārī in his Ṣaḥīḥ, Abū Zurʿah al-Dimashqī, Muḥammad ibn ʿAwf al-Ṭāʾī, his son Muḥammad ibn Khālid ibn Khalī, and many others.
Al-Nasāʾī said, “There is nothing objectionable about him.” (1)
I (the author) add: he was one of the distinguished scholars.
ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Saʿīd, the judge, related: I heard Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Bahrānī say:
When al-Maʾmūn summoned the people of Homs to appear before him in Damascus, four men were selected: Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Wuḥāẓī, ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh, Abū al-Yamān, and Khālid ibn Khalī.
He continued: The first to enter was Abū al-Yamān.
Yaḥyā ibn Aktham asked him, “What do you say about Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāliḥ?”
He replied, “He has introduced among us certain heterodox notions that we do not recognize.”
He then asked, “And what do you say about ʿAlī ibn ʿAyyāsh?”
He answered, “A righteous man, but unfit for the judiciary.”
He asked, “And Khālid ibn Khalī?”
He responded, “I was the one who taught him the Quran.”
Thereupon he ordered that he be removed, and he was led out.
