Khalifah said, “He passed away in 219 AH.” (1) Ibn Ḥibbān stated, “He died in Ramadan of 218 AH.” (2)
217 – Sunayd, Abū ʿAlī Ḥusayn ibn Dāwūd al-Maṣṣīṣī * (Q)
An imam, ḥāfiẓ, and the hadith scholar of the frontier region, Abū ʿAlī Ḥusayn ibn Dāwūd. His sobriquet was Sunayd al-Maṣṣīṣī, the muḥtasib, and he was the author of the “Great Tafsir.”
He narrated from Ḥammād ibn Zayd, Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān al-Ḍubaʿī, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubārak, ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus, and many others.
Transmitters who reported from him include Abū Bakr al-Athram, Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī, Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr, ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Dayr ʿĀqūlī, and a great many others.
Abū Ḥātim said, “Truthful.” (3) Abū Dāwūd remarked, “He was not all that.” (4) Al-Nasāʾī said, “He is not reliable.” (5)
I say: The scholars treated him leniently and transmitted from him, yet he was by no means precise.
