and he passed away later that same day. (1)
This report is agreed upon.
Muslim also transmitted it, through al-Hulwani and ʿAbd, from Yaʿqub ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Salih, from al-Zuḥri.
The wording, “and he passed away later that same day,” is singular; what is reliably preserved is that he died in the early morning, before noon, on Monday. (2)
Abu Bakr al-Humaydi’s version of the hadith appears with a lofty chain in al-Ghaylāniyyāt.
Yusuf ibn Abi Nasr, ʿAbd Allah ibn Qawam, and a number of others informed us, saying:
Ibn al-Zubaydi informed us; Abu al-Waqt informed us; al-Dawudi informed us; Ibn Hammuyah informed us; Ibn Matar informed us; al-Bukhari told us; al-Humaydi told us; Sufyan told us; Yahya ibn Saʿid al-Ansari told us; Muhammad ibn Ibrahim informed me that he heard ʿAlqamah ibn Waqqas al-Laythi say:
“I heard ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—declare from the pulpit:
‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Actions are only by intentions,”’ and he related the rest of the hadith.”
This is the first narration with which al-Bukhari opened his Sahih (3), treating it as a preface to the work.
(1) It is recorded in Musnad al-Humaydi, no. 1188. Al-Bukhari also transmits it, 2/138, in the following chapters: “Those most learned and virtuous are the ones entitled to lead the prayer” (Book of Congregational Prayer), “May the worshipper turn round for an urgent matter” (Book on the Description of Prayer), “Whoever walked backwards during his prayer” (Book on Actions within the Prayer), and, in the Book of Military Expeditions, “The Prophet’s illness and death.” Muslim relates it (no. 419) in the Book of Prayer, chapter “Appointing a deputy imam when the imam is excused.” It is likewise found in Sunan al-Nasaʾi, 4/7, Book of Funerals, chapter “Death on Monday.”
(2) Ibn Hajar comments in Fath al-Bari, 8/110, on the phrase “and he died at the end of that day”: this statement weakens Ibn Ishaq’s categorical claim that the Prophet died when the forenoon heat had intensified. The two reports can be reconciled by understanding “the end of the day” as the very beginning of the day’s second half, that is, at zawal (when the sun starts to decline). The period of intense forenoon comes before zawal and continues until the sun’s decline is certain. Musa ibn ʿUqba, citing Ibn Shihab, explicitly states that he ﷺ died when the sun had declined, and Abu al-Aswad reports the same from ʿUrwa. This supports the reconciliation just mentioned.
