Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi, Ibrahim ibn Arafah—Nifṭawayh—and Ibn ʿAdi said: he died in the year 229 AH. (1)
Nifṭawayh adds: he was kept in irons, imprisoned because he refused to affirm that the Qur’an was created. Dragged away in his fetters, he was cast into a pit; he was neither shrouded nor was the funeral prayer offered for him. This was done to him by Ibn Abi Dawud’s lieutenant. (2)
We were informed by al-Musallam ibn Muhammad al-Qaysi; Abu al-Yaman al-Kindī informed us; ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim likewise, on the authority of al-Kindī; Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Baqi informed us; al-Hasan ibn ʿAli dictated to us; al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; Hamzah ibn Muhammad al-Katib narrated to us; Nuʿaym ibn Hammad narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, from Anas:
Whenever the month of Ramadan arrived, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say to the people: “A purifier has come to you—the month of Ramadan. During it the gates of Paradise are opened and the devils are shackled. In it the believer readies his strength for fasting and prayer, while for the wicked it is a punishment; he exploits therein people’s moments of heedlessness. Whoever is deprived of its goodness has truly been deprived.” (3)
