He dictated it to me on the authority of ʿĪsā ibn ʿĪsā; I read it back to him, but he would not endorse it.
Ibn ʿAdī said: The report was also transmitted by Ibn Wahb’s nephew from his uncle, from ʿĪsā, but he phrased the chain as “from Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr” in place of “Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān.”
It was likewise related by Hilāl ibn al-ʿAlāʾ, who said: “ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; ʿĪsā narrated to us; Ḥarīz narrated to us.”
An unusual route has also been reported from ʿAmr, from his father, ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus, and Ibn ʿAdī and others alleged that these transmitters had lifted the report from Nuʿaym.
ʿAbd al-Khāliq ibn Manṣūr said: I saw Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn apparently disparaging Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād with regard to the report of Umm al-Ṭufayl about the Vision, saying: “He ought not to have narrated anything of this kind.” (1)
Abū Zurʿah al-Naṣrī said: I showed Duḥaym the ḥadith that Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād related to us—from al-Walīd ibn Muslim, from Ibn Jābir, from Ibn Abī Zakariyyā, from Rajāʾ ibn Ḥaywah, from al-Nawwās: “When Allah speaks the revelation …,” and the rest of the report—and he said, “It has no basis.” (2)
As for the account of Umm al-Ṭufayl, it was transmitted by Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Tirmidhī and others: “Nuʿaym narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith informed us, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl, that Marwān ibn ʿUthmān narrated to him, from ʿUmārah ibn ʿĀmir, from Umm al-Ṭufayl, the wife of Ubayy ibn Kaʿb:
‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention that he saw his Lord in such-and-such a form.’”
This report is exceedingly objectionable. Al-Nasāʾī spoke well when he said, “And who is Marwān ibn ʿUthmān that his statement should be believed concerning Allah?” (3)
Nor was Nuʿaym the sole transmitter of it; it was also narrated by Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Miṣrī, the ḥāfiẓ.
