Mustawrid al-Asadī—originally from Basra, a reliable authority. He would dictate to me until I grew weary, then say, “Abu’l-Hasan, write down this ḥadith.”
Even after I showed fatigue he would dictate fifty or sixty ḥadiths at a stretch. When I met him on my second journey I found a great throng around him, so I said, “I have already taken my share from you.”
Abu Nuʿaym would ask me about his name and his father’s name. When I told him he would say, “Ahmad, that is the scorpion-charm.” (1)
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: My father was asked about him and replied, “He was trustworthy.” (2)
Abū ʿAmr ibn Ḥakīm reported that Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, concerning the ḥadith of Musaddad from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from ʿUbayd Allah, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, remarked: “It is as though they were gold dīnārs.”
He then added, “It is as though you are hearing it from the Prophet himself, blessings and peace be upon him.” (3)
Al-Bukhārī said (4): “Musaddad ibn Musarhad ibn Musarbal ibn Murʿabal died in the year 228 AH.”
Ibn Saʿd and several others recorded the same date (5), though none of them specified the month.
All of the Six Books relate from him except Muslim and Ibn Mājah.
