Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Saʿīd ibn Kathīr ibn ʿUfayr narrated to us:
“We were with al-Maʾmūn at the Qubbat al-Hawāʾ (the Dome of the Winds). He said to us, ‘How astonishing was Pharaoh of Egypt when he proclaimed, “Is the dominion of Egypt not mine?” (Q 43:51)!’
“I replied, ‘O Amīr al-Muʾminīn (Commander of the Faithful), what you now behold is only the remnant of what was destroyed. Allah the Exalted says: “We destroyed whatever Pharaoh and his people had fashioned and whatever they had erected” (Q 7:137).’
“He said, ‘You have spoken the truth,’ and then he fell silent.”

Ibn Yūnus states elsewhere in his History: “This report is regarded as objectionable concerning Saʿīd ibn ʿUfayr, for no one besides him relates it from Ibn Lahīʿah.” (1)

He adds: “Another narration that he transmits from Ibn Lahīʿah is likewise rejected.”

I say: For someone of Saʿīd’s vast learning, it is not surprising that he should transmit a report on his own—and then Ibn Lahīʿah

(1) The author does not cite the exact wording of the hadith for which Saʿid b. ʿUfayr was reproached. It is found in Ibn ʿAdi’s al-Kamil, 2 / fol. 365, through the chain: ʿUbayd Allah b. Saʿid b. Kathir b. ʿUfayr – my father told me – Malik (b. Anas) told me, from his uncle Abu Suhayl b. Malik, from ʿAtaʾ b. Abi Rabah, from Ibn ʿUmar: A man asked the Prophet ﷺ, “Which of the believers is the best?” He replied, “The one with the finest character.” He then asked, “Which of the believers is the most intelligent (akyas)?” He replied, “The one who remembers death the most and prepares for it best.” Ibn ʿAdi comments: “I know of no one who reports this from Malik except Ibn ʿUfayr, nor from Ibn ʿUfayr except his son.” Ibn ʿAdi continues: “Yaʿqub b. Ishaq Abu ʿAwana al-Isfarayini related to us: ʿUbayd Allah b. Saʿid b. Kathir b. ʿUfayr told us: my father narrated to me, Malik b. Anas narrated to me, from Jaʿfar b. Muhammad, from his father, from ʿAʾisha, that the Prophet ﷺ was washed in a shirt.” Ibn ʿAdi remarks: “In the Muwattaʾ this report occurs merely as ‘from Jaʿfar, from his father, that the Prophet ﷺ…,’ without ʿAʾisha in the chain. After examining Saʿid’s narrations, I found nothing else objectionable to him besides these two hadiths, so the fault is likely with ʿUbayd Allah, for whenever a trustworthy narrator reports from Saʿid b. ʿUfayr his hadith is sound.” The author quotes Ibn ʿAdi’s words in al-Mizan, 2 / 155 (with slight abridgement), and then adds: “Nonetheless, Saʿid does have a dubious hadith transmitted by ʿAbd Allah b. Hammad al-Amuli, from Saʿid b. ʿUfayr, from Yahya b. Ayyub, from ʿUbayd Allah b. ʿUmar, from Abu’z-Zubayr, from Jabir—raised to the Prophet—concerning the non-obligatory nature of ʿumra; I cited it in the entry on Yahya, for Saʿid is more reliable than he.” In Yahya’s biography (4 / 363) the text reads: from Jabir who said, “I asked, Messenger of Allah, is ʿumra obligatory, its obligation like that of hajj?” He replied, “No—yet performing ʿumra is better for you.” He then comments: “This is an odd and astonishing report in which Saʿid alone conveys it from Yahya b. Ayyub.”
