Abū Ḥātim said, “I asked him about his personal name and he replied, ‘It is my kunyah.’ (1)
Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim stated: “Abū Bilāl’s given name is Mirdās ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Burdah, grandson of the Messenger of Allah’s Companion Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī.”
Others say that his name was Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad; it has also been reported that it was ʿAbd Allāh, and this last identification is the most reliable. I think he died sometime before 230 AH, and he was in his nineties.
