He narrated from Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth, Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, and many others.
Abū Nuʿaym used to say, “I have never seen anyone with a better memory than al-Wakīʿī.” (1)
Among those who transmitted from him were Aḥmad ibn al-Qāsim al-Anmāṭī, Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī, and others; yet he passed away before his narrations could be widely circulated.
Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī said, “He had committed one hundred thousand hadiths to memory; I do not think he ever heard a single hadith without memorizing it.” (2)
Al-Ḥarbī also related that Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said to Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar al-Wakīʿī:
“O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Thawr, from Ḥabīb ibn ʿUbayd, from al-Miqdām, who said: The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘When one of you loves his brother, let him inform him.’ ” (3)
Abū Dāwūd remarked, “Al-Wakīʿī preserved knowledge exactly as he heard it.” (4)
Al-Dāraquṭnī mentioned him, saying, “Trustworthy—and his son Muḥammad is trustworthy as well.” (5)
Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī further stated, “Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Wakīʿī died in 215 AH.” (6)
Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar al-Wakīʿī, who died in 235 AH, will be discussed later. (7)
