Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

wage war against Allah and His Messenger.” [al-Māʾidah 5:33]

Qatādah added, “We have been informed that after this incident the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to urge the people in his sermons to give charity and forbade mutilation.” Agreed upon.

In some lines of transmission the wording is: “from ʿUkl, or from ʿUraynah.”

Shuʿbah, Hammām, and others related it from Qatādah with the unequivocal wording: “from ʿUraynah.”

The same was reported by Ḥumayd, Thābit, and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Ṣuhayb on the authority of Anas.

Zuhayr said: Simmāk ibn Ḥarb narrated to us, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrah, from Anas, that a number of men from ʿUraynah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and pledged allegiance to him. At the time a sickness called al-mūm—pleurisy—had broken out in Medina, so they said, “O Messenger of Allah, this illness has struck; would you allow us to join the camels?” He replied, “Yes; go out and stay with them.” They went out, killed one of the two herdsmen, and drove off the camels. The other herdsman, though wounded, reached the Prophet and said, “They have killed my companion and taken the camels.” About twenty young men from the Anṣār were present, so he sent them in pursuit and dispatched a tracker to follow their trail. They were captured; he then had their hands and feet cut off and their eyes branded. Muslim recorded the report.

Ayyūb narrated, through Abū Qilābah, from Anas: A party from ʿUkl arrived, accepted Islam, and later found the climate unsuitable. (He told the rest of the story.) It states: “Before the sun had risen high they were brought back; the Prophet ordered nails to be heated, branded them, severed their hands and feet, left their wounds uncauterized, and cast them on the lava field, where they asked for water but were given none until they died.”
