concerning Ṭalḥa and ʿĀʾisha; another entitled al-Maʿrifa (Recognition); and a treatise called On the Days of Hārūn al-Rashīd.
Among them is al-Najjār, the Teacher:
- Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Najjār *
One of the foremost dialectical theologians. Some said he used to make weighing scales. He once debated al-Naẓẓām and so angered him that al-Naẓẓām kicked him; it is said that, after lingering in illness, he eventually died from the blow. Al-Nadīm listed the titles of al-Najjār’s works, among them: The Proof of the Messengers, Destiny and Decree, Grace and Divine Support, The Necessitating Will, and many other writings.
Among them:
- Barghūth Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā al-Jahmī **
The arch-heretic, Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā al-Jahmī. He was among those who debated Imām Aḥmad during the inquisition. He authored: Capacity (al-Istiṭāʿa); The Doctrines (al-Maqālāt); Ijtihād; A Refutation of Jaʿfar ibn Ḥarb; and al-Muḍāhāh (Imitation). It was said that he died in 240 AH, while another report places his death in 241 AH.

وَمِنْهُمُ: النَّجَّارُ الأُسْتَاذُ:
١٨٨ - أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الحُسَيْنُ بنُ مُحَمَّدٍ *
ابْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ النَّجَّارُ، أَحَدُ كِبَارِ المُتَكَلِّمِيْنَ.
وَقِيْلَ: كَانَ يَعْمَلُ المَوَازِيْنَ.
وَلَهُ مُنَاظَرَةٌ مَعَ النَّظَّامِ، فَأَغضَبَ النَّظَّامَ، فَرَفَسَهُ، فَيُقَالُ: مَاتَ مِنْهَا بَعْدَ تَعَلُّلٍ.
ذَكَرَ النَّدِيْمُ أَسْمَاءَ تَصَانِيْفِ النَّجَّارِ، مِنْهَا: (إِثْبَاتُ الرُّسُلِ) ، وَكِتَابُ (القَضَاءِ وَالقَدَرِ) ، وَكِتَابُ (اللُّطْفِ وَالتَّأْيِيْدِ) ، وَكِتَابُ (الإِرَادَةِ المُوْجِبَةِ) ، وَأَشْيَاءُ كَثِيْرَةٌ.
وَمِنْهُم:
١٨٩ - بَرْغُوْثٌ مُحَمَّدُ بنُ عِيْسَى الجَهْمِيُّ **
وَهُوَ رَأْسُ البِدْعَةِ، أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بنُ عِيْسَى الجَهْمِيُّ.
أَحَدُ مَنْ كَانَ يُنَاظِرُ الإِمَامَ أَحْمَدَ وَقْتَ المِحْنَةِ.
صَنَّفَ: كِتَابَ (الاسْتِطَاعَةِ) ، وَكِتَابَ (المَقَالاَتِ) ، وَكِتَابَ (الاجْتِهَادِ) ، وَكِتَابَ (الرَّدِّ عَلَى جَعْفَرِ بنِ حَرْبٍ) ، وَكِتَابَ (المُضَاهَاةِ) .
قِيْلَ: تُوُفِّيَ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعِيْنَ وَمائَتَيْنِ.
وَقِيْلَ: سَنَةَ إِحْدَى وَأَرْبَعِيْنَ.
