Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and among them:

  1. Abū Mūsā ʿĪsā ibn Ṣabīḥ—known as al-Mirdāz—a Basran counted among the senior Muʿtazilites and the authors of copious works. He studied under Bishr ibn al-Muʿtamir, adopted an ascetic, devout lifestyle, yet espoused a number of odious positions. He claimed that the Lord is capable of injustice and of lying, although He never does so.

He declared the unbelief of anyone who said the Quran is pre-eternal, and likewise the unbelief of anyone who said our actions are created. He affirmed the vision of Allah and branded as unbelievers all who denied it, to the extent that a man once said to him, “So the Garden whose breadth is the heavens and the earth will be entered by no one but you and three others?!”—whereupon he fell silent.

Qāḍī Ḥamāh Shihāb al-Dīn Ibrāhīm mentions him in his book al-Firaq, noting that he died in 226 AH.

And among them:

  1. al-Walīd ibn Abān al-Karābīsī—the dialectical theologian, one of the eminent scholars.

The hadith scholar Aḥmad ibn Sinān al-Qaṭṭān said: “He was my maternal uncle. When death approached him he said to his sons: ‘Do you know anyone more knowledgeable in speculative theology than I?’ They replied, ‘No.’ He asked, ‘Do you harbour any suspicion toward me?’ They said, ‘No.’ He then said, ‘I commend to you what the hadith-folk are upon, for I have seen the truth with them. I do not mean their leading figures, but these scattered adherents.’”
