Among those who transmitted from him were his son, Ahmad ibn ʿUmar al-Wakiʿi, al-Hasan ibn ʿAli al-Hulwani, Muhammad ibn ʿAsim al-Thaqafi, ʿAbbas al-Duri, Ahmad ibn ʿAbd al-Hamid al-Harithi, al-Hasan ibn ʿAli ibn ʿAffan, and many others.
He was counted among the scholars of hadith.
Yahya ibn Maʿin declared him reliable (1).
Al-Nasaʾi said, “He is not strong.”
Abu Dawud said, “He was a propagator of irjaʾ (the Murjiʾah doctrine).”
Harun stated that he died in the year 202 AH.
172 – al-Nazzam, Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Sayyar *
The chief teacher of the Muʿtazilites and a prolific author, he is Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Sayyar, a client of the family of al-Harith ibn ʿAbbad, of the Dubaʿi clan, from Basra, a speculative theologian.
He spoke on predestination, introduced singular positions, and was the teacher of al-Jahiz.
He used to say: “Allah is not capable of injustice or evil; if He were capable, we could not feel secure from it, whereas people are capable of injustice.” He openly maintained that Allah cannot bring anyone out of Hell and that He is unable to create anything better than what He has already created.
I say: The Quran and sound reason belie such people and deter them from speaking in this manner.
